• Because the component constitution on many devices are often similar or identical, there may be devices that are unlisted but may actually work with the existing driver framework for previously supported devices. In such a case, your non-listed but working device will likely be reported in your system messages as being one of those previously supported devices. If you encounter such an occurrence, please do report your success on the LMML so that proper detection/identification of your device can be added within the drivers.

Firmwares

Many of the devices on this page need a firmware, the best source for firmwares is OpenELEC dvb-firmware repository.

The firmwares on OpenELEC's repository are already extracted, just download the proper .fw file and copy to your firmware folder (usually /usr/lib/firmware).

If you are experiencing problems with USB devices, it may not be the fault of the tuner. For example AMD 700 series chipsets (e.g. 780G) have a problem with USB ports which results in tuners working or partially working or not working at all. This can be solved by using a separate USB adapter with a reliable chipset (e.g. VIA 6212L, NEC).

The programming of the MT352 is hidden behind the USB protocol defined within the firmware. These boxes can only deliver part of the Transport Stream (using a hardware PID filter); it is not known how to deactivate this. (The driver was completely reverse-engineered without the help of its real vendor (assuming WideView is the manufacturer). UPDATE: the vendor was so kind to provide information about unknown commands, hence the driver is complete.

Hi, I've purchased a 'Yakumo Quickstick TV easy' and it doesn't work after compiling and installing the modules. Its vendor and product id ara 0x14aa and 0x620, and it does not appear in modules.usbmap. So I think it's not defined.. ßingen.

You're soliciting help from volunteer developers who work on V4L-DVB matters in their spare time, and such work can be non-trivial (i.e. requiring even thousands of hours work). So being demanding is one sure route to being ignored. (Honestly, this point really shouldn't even need to be written, but you'd be surprised at the number of irrational individuals who write into the mailing list demanding this or that).
• May pass without garnering a response—a distinct byproduct of the fact that there are a limited number of developers, whom might be able to help, that are associated with the project. The latest Freecom/Yacumo usb stick has a Realtek 2831U chipset and any of the following usb id's: 14aa:0160, 0bda:2831, 2304:022b, 185b:0100, 13d3:3216, 13d3:3220, 13d3:3236, 13d3:3244, 08dd:2103. UPDATE: Realtek submitted a v0.0.2 of their driver feb 20th 2008. This has been confirmed to function for this Freecom (or Conceptronic) stick with usb id: 14aa:0160 on a 2.6.22.17 kernel. This stick has a MT2061F tuner chip, but this driver also supports the MLX5005 tuner chip. No additional firmware file is needed.

The driver source can be downloaded from [176], but be aware it has only be confirmed to work on devices with usb id 14aa:0160, and is not compatible with the current code base.

Geniatech T328 DVB-T

UPDATE: 'Anttip' linuxtv HG [182] repository has EC168 development drivers (not yet part of 2.6.31.1 Kernel v4l drivers), which work with EC168 based dvb-t sticks (18b4:1689 device id). Numerous other re-branded sticks use the same chipset.

We tried to get information about the usb interface at Twinhan, but there was none avaiable. The chip vendor Uli [184] refuses to open all relevant information.

Maybe the same applies for the TwinhanDTV Hurricne (704D) [185].

There is also IT9135 based WandTV, id is: 048d:9006. You can try the way described for Kworld_UB499-2T. It 'kind of works' for me with the older driver http://wasietsmet.nl/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/IT9135_SRC_i686_patch.tar.gz (scans the channels). The newer driver http://wasietsmet.nl/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/V10.12.30.1.zip compiles with unknown symbol errors: “__stack_chk_fail” and “mcount”.

Supported by 3rd Party Drivers

Sometimes a manufacturer forks v4l-dvb all on their own and writes a driver for their device so they can claim Linux support.

In-Kernel 3rd party Drivers

Advantages:

1. It's possible your device will work. for the moment.
2. If the manufacturer provides open source drivers with an acceptable license, volunteers could technically implement this code in the Linux kernel for true support. However. :

Disadvantages:

1. The quality of the code (if open, there are also cases where you just get a binary blob) too often just isn't good enough and there's still too much work to be done to make the device work. There was probably a reason the manufacturer didn't just send their patches to the linux-media mailinglist.
2. Depending on what exactly the manufacturer did, you may have to reinstall the drivers every time your kernel is updated.
3. When the manufacturer stops updating the drivers, the drivers will quickly refuse to install as newer kernels are released.

In case a manufacturer provides open source drivers the patches can be sent to the linux-media mailinglist Linux-Media Mailing List (LMML). Keep in mind however that if the license isn't compatible with the Linux kernel or the quality of the code isn't good enough, these will not become a part of the Linux kernel.

NOTE:As linux media drivers are character based, drivers can be also written using libfuse's character device in userspace example.If written that way, an out-of-kernel driver can be written, which fully integrates to udev without the disadvantage of closed source or incompatibility to other drivers. Such driver would rely on kernel fuse and character device in user space support as well as libfuse.

Closed source userspace drivers (mostly Sundtek)

Advantages:

1. Same driver may be usable for different Linux versions, depending on what vendor did.
2. No need to reinstall drivers when your kernel is updated.
3. Drivers can be profiled easily and more accurately than in kernelspace.
4. If the driver crashes, it won't crash the system or kernel, only the driver and applications using the driver will be affected. Userspace drivers can also be used when debugging drivers for USB host controllers, as the userspace driver can't crash the system, making debugging easier.
5. If the manufacturer would stop to support the drivers, the userspace driver may still continue to work with newer Linux systems

Disadvantages:

1. You can't look into the sources. While this may be not a problem for end-users, it prevents hacking devices and trying to fix bugs (usually not a problem for endusers)
